You have to check the schedule, as 9:30 is only as good as the band scheduled but the bands they normally get here are incredible given the intimacy of the venue. From Bob Dylan to Kings of Leon to Ryan Adams to the Black Crowes. Great acts play small shows at the 9:30. But be careful with the funny cigarettes, they're not down with that and that huge guy with tats and quarter-sized holes in his ears will kick your arse out. By the way, guess what times shows usually start....go ahead, guess. Wow, everyone was wrong about you, good job.

A really great place to see a band. It has all the trappings of a dive bar with all of the elegance of a New Orleans dive bar. The bands are usually jam happy and the folks get up and dance. If you need time away from the band, there are plenty of levels and backrooms to hide in. It's a DC institution and Thursday night is one of their finest.

New to the DC scene, this is becoming the place to be when amps are plugged in. Attracting a variety of up and comers, expect to see the Socs push aside the Greasers for dance floor space.

Remember the scene from Animal House where the guys bring their dates to see Otis and a few men ask if they can dance with their dates? Remember? Exactly. Love the New Vegas Lounge. Better on the weekend.

Your Mom used to tell you how Bob Seger played some gymnasium or ballroom when she was 20, and it was the best. Well, live it up like Mom did. The bands here bring their A games, the dance floor is literally a ballroom and there is a great upstairs deck for smoke breaks.

Located in a Bermuda triangle of Clarendon live music, Whitlow's often has a decent 'just out of the garage' band. The bar is spacious enough to allow the music to be your background or the main attraction.
