Smith is another one of Linda Derschang's Seattle gems. The beer list is huge and eclectic and the food is top notch. Try the ham and cheese donuts - crispy nuggets of joy filled with (duh) ham & cheese, swimming in melted gruyere. Follow it up with the perfectly fried duck leg, burger or mac and cheese.

What makes an exceptional pub? Is it the beers, or the grub, the scene or the people swillin' the drinks? We say all of the above, which is why we love Hilltop. Not your average pub food and not your average beer selection. This is one of the best little gathering places in Queen Anne. You know it's legit when the barkeep has one of those hand-pulled beer engine tap thingamajigs and Hale's Ales brews special just for them. Sometimes it's a raucous good time and sometimes it's a laid-back speakeasy. The chicken sandwich lives up to its reputation. Hours: Mon-Wed 11:30am-12am, Thu-Sat 11:30am-1am, Sun 11:30am-12am

Dead mounted animals watch over as you knock back cheap beers and delicious food. One of those bucks has it in for us, because the bastard won't stop staring. Good wings, good burgers, good 'chos, good times. The Tijuana Burger will fill ya up right and the peanut butter and bacon burger is just there for shock value, which actually works. They have old timey skeeball, which is a lot of fun for about 10 minutes. King's is a bevy of fine Ballard cheer. Hours: Mon-Fri 4pm-2am, Sat-Sun 12pm-2am

The beers here are so good they're called "biers." It's the closest place we've found to the tavern that Frodo and his homies hang out in. And trust us, we've scoured the country. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing and the beer list is so long and hard to pronounce you know it's good. The staff will help you find the right grog to fit your mood. The food is hearty and comforting. Eat, drink, be merry and take a cab home. Hours: Daily 11am-2am

Drink a well-poured Guinness next to a cozy faux fire while getting a healthy dose of traditional Irish tuneage. That's our idea of a good time. The food is comforting, but there's something not quite right about eating jalapeno poppers at an Irish bar. It's elbow to elbow on the weekends with a mixed bag of college kids and neighborhoodies, but we think that's a good thing. Don't step up to the dart board unless you've been trained in the old country.
