This is the usual way for most New Yorkers, other than subway, which also runs at all hours. You don't call them - just walk out onto the street and you'll usually get one in under a minute. Less certainty with peak traffic hours and more crowded parts of the city, but you'll usually get one eventually. Watch out for off-duty periods, such as around 5pm.
